What to Expect
Coming to an emergency room can be an anxious and confusing time. Here is an overview of the four important steps patients can expect during a visit to the Community hospital emergency department:

  1. Triage: Upon arrival, the patient is seen by a triage nurse who prioritizes care needs based on the complaint or injury and number of resources the patient will require for care.
  2. Registration: A registration clerk takes basic information about the patient.
  3. Medical Care: If a room is available, the patient is taken to an exam room for treatment. If a room is not available, the patient is asked to wait in the waiting room until one is available. Patients may not be seen in the order in which they arrived. Life threatening emergencies are seen immediately.
  4. Discharge: If the patient is not admitted to the hospital, they will receive after-care instructions to follow at home. It is important that the patient understands and follows these instructions and the follow-up care information.
