Pricing & Charge Data

As you may be aware, on February 22, 2024, Change Healthcare experienced a cyber-attack. This cyber-attack significantly impacted hospitals, pharmacies, financial institutions, and insurance companies across the country as 1/3 of all medical claims in the United States are processed through Change Healthcare (approximately 15 billion transactions per year). Over the last several months, Change Healthcare started notifying parties about protected health information that was impacted and/or compromised by the cyber-attack.  

Community Hospital was recently informed by Change Healthcare that our data has not been compromised in this breach. Nonetheless, you may receive a letter from Change Healthcare indicating that you were personally affected. If so, we recommend you follow the identity protection instructions listed in the letter, which is free of charge. Medical claims are processed through several institutions when receiving care, including providers (like Community Hospital), financial institutions and insurance companies. Given the information provided to us from Change Healthcare, the actual notification letters from Change Healthcare are likely issued due to a breach of information maintained by another institution or insurance company. Chargemaster

A hospital’s Chargemaster is a current, all-inclusive list of standard charges representing thousands of items, goods and services provided to patients. Community Hospital sets charges based on cost, expected reimbursement, and a market analysis of Colorado average charges.

The list of standard charges may not be helpful for you to determine the cost of your care for a particular service or to compare cost between different health care facilities. The cost of care provided to each patient is unique. Charges may vary greatly from one patient to another due to differences in individual care needs, complicating factors, diagnosis, procedures, testing, supplies, medications, and services required to provide appropriate care.

Community Hospital is moving to a more inclusive charge structure. Our room and procedure rates may include services such as therapy services, IV therapy, oxygen, certain supplies, etc.

It is important to understand that these charges do not represent what you will be billed or what you will pay if you have Medicaid, Medicare or other insurance including commercial insurance. For patients without insurance, Community Hospital offers both self-pay and prompt pay discounts. Additionally, charges do not guarantee payment or coverage of services by an insurance company or a specific insurance plan.

The Chargemaster does not represent what a hospital will be paid. Community Hospital is paid well below standard charges for the services provided. For Medicare and Medicaid specifically, Community Hospital is paid 13-14% less than our competitors for the same services. Therefore, while charges vary from one hospital to another, payment to hospitals for the same services also vary greatly.

The Chargemaster is current as of January 1, 2024 and is subject to change without notification. Cost to Community Hospital for items such as supplies or medications are constantly changing. Therefore updates to the current standard charges happen on a regular basis. For the most up-to-date pricing, please contact the Community Hospital Business Office at 970-257-6200 .

Please note the charges listed are not what the patient pays and may not be helpful for a patient to determine the final cost of care. The final cost of care is determined by many factors, including insurances, discounts and other services. It is important to remember that a patient will generally pay less than the posted price. We encourage patients to contact the billing department and/or the location in which they are receiving care to determine an estimated cost of care prior to visit.

These charges do not include professional services provided to you by physicians or providers outside of our hospital, including but not limited to: Radiologist, Pathologist, Clinic-based providers, Surgeons or Anesthesiologist. You will be billed separately for these services.

For services provided to patients with government funded health care plans, such as Medicare and Medicaid, hospitals are paid below what it actually costs to provide care to patients.

How to Use Charge & Quality Data

Having charge and quality information at your fingertips enables you to make decisions with better information based on true value, and what the best value is for you.

In the past few years, several reputable organizations have developed interactive public websites that report health care quality information.

But all sources are not equal, and consumers must be certain the data is based on national standards and benchmarks for quality and safety. It's also important to understand how to interpret and use the information.

How to Use Quality Data:

  • Familiarize yourself with the measures and how they can help improve the care that's delivered to patients.
  • Review the methodology section of the websites. Are the results based on nationally recognized benchmarks?
  • Be sure to look at the results over a period of time to get an accurate portrayal of organizational quality. One bad outcome in a quarter with relatively few procedures will greatly skew the results. Looking at three or four quarters of data provides a more accurate picture.

Additional factors to consider:

Charge and quality data is just a starting point - just two factors that should go into health care decision-making. Not any one measure is indicative of an organization's overall performance.

Discuss your choices with your physician and/or call the hospital to ask questions. Look at a hospital's nurse to patient ratio and patient satisfaction scores.
